Here's how:

Gather supplies:

(I added some light blue and cream after I took the yarn photo.)

Here's the pattern:

ch 49

Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook, skip next ch, hdc in next 10 chs, 3 hdc in next ch, hdc in next 10 chs, skip 1 ch, hdc in next 10 chs, 3 hdc in next ch, hdc in next 10 chs, skip 1 ch, hdc in last ch. ch 1, turn

Row 2: and rest of rows:  hdc in 2nd st from hook, skip next st, hdc in next 10 sts, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in next 10 sts, skip 2 sts, hdc in next 10 sts, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in next 10 sts, skip 1 st, hdc in last st, ch 1, turn

and here is the pattern in photos:

ROW 1: 

 hdc in 3rd ch from hook

 skip 1 ch and hdc in next 10 chs

 3 hdc in next ch

 hdc in next 10 chs

skip 1 ch and hdc in next 11 ch 

 3 hdc in in next ch

 10 hdc in next 10 chs, skip 1 ch, 1 hdc in last ch,

 ch 1 then turn

ROW 2:

 hdc in next ch

skip 1 st and hdc in next 10 sts 

 3 hdc in next st

10 hdc in next 10 st

 skip 2 st

 10 hdc in next 10 st

3 hdc in next st 

skip 1 st 

1 hdc in last st, ch 1 turn

repeat row 2 until desired length.

and this after four rows

Here's a color change 

At the end of the row, before the last hdc is complete,

slip new color through all three loops on hook. 

 ch 1, turn

Here's a review of row 2 with the new color: 

 hdc in first st

skip 1 st and 10 hdc 

3 hdc in 1 st 

then 3 10 hdc, skip 2 sts etc. as above

Keep on crocheting until desired length.
(You can use your neck to measure.)
I like the ones that can wrap around twice, best.

Then slip stitch the two ends together.

It also helps if you end with the color you began with for a more hidden seam.

You can also twist the scarf before joining for a more rippled effect.
